renewable, recyclable and designed
to save energy through innovative
design. The fi rst year of this
initiative has been a tremendous
success, so much so that we have
signifi cantly expanded our product
offering and have plans for further
expansion in the coming year.
Expert Technical Support:
Driving innovation further
I personally feel – and I think our
customers would agree – that
the comprehensive technical
support Goodfellow provides
sets us apart. Ready access to
our in-house multilingual team of
scientists and materials experts
greatly streamlines the process
of identifying the most suitable
material for a specifi c application.
If a customer fi nds that he or she
needs something not in our standard
catalogue, we will fabricate or
custom fi nish the material or
component as needed.
Over the last 12 months we
have launched a suite of apps
and dedicated websites to ensure
that the necessary digital tools
are in place to further support the
innovation process. These tools
include knowledge-sharing hubs,
educational apps, sector-specifi c
informational portals and a range of
social media channels that are used
to communicate and interact with
customers. Today’s R&D is much
more complex and fast moving than
just a few short years ago, and we
at Goodfellow are pursuing every
means at our disposal – from tried
and true phone communications to
online technical tools – to help drive
the potential for innovation even
further.
Celebrating Innovation:
Applauding the new and
noteworthy
For the past three years, Goodfellow
has sponsored the “Materials
Application of the Year” award at
the British Engineering Excellence
Awards event, which celebrates
the brilliant engineering work
going on throughout Britain. Each
year I see a common thread of
Innovation in the areas of Design,
Engineering, Manufacturing and
Consultancy running through every
one of the winning entries within
the competition’s ten categories.
Judges involved in the most recent
“Materials Application of the Year”
award were looking for evidence
of how the properties of a material
or material combination were
exploited and used in an innovative
way to solve a design challenge.
The winning company, Alvant, was
selected for using aluminium matrix
composites to reduce the weight of
airplane landing gear by as much
as 30%, assisting the aerospace
industry’s drive to reduce fuel
consumption and carbon emissions.
Almost daily we read of
remarkable innovations that affect
so many aspects of life. They
deserve to be celebrated … and
Goodfellow is proud to contribute in
any way we can to help make them
happen.
