EDITOR’S COMMENT

THE MORE OBSERVANT among you may
have noticed that a particular topic has
not featured in my comments over the
last years few years. This is only notable
because it’s a topic with which we have all
become wearyingly familiar: Brexit.
I’ve foreborn from commenting on
the subject for several reasons. One is
that the subject has become so divisive
that virtually any comment on it or its
implications will tend to be perceived by
one side or the other as partisan. Another
reason is its sheer ubiquity: I had no wish
to add my voice to the cacophony of
opinions that were available.
Most of all, however, I was conscious of
having little to bring to the debate. After
all, the nature of the issue was such that
any pronouncements about it could only
amount to speculation. Enough people
on all sides of the argument have made
erroneous predictions over the last
four years. I saw no particular merit in
becoming one of them.
Because, of course, the single
predictable feature of the Brexit saga has
been its unpredictability. Uncertainty has
been so indelibly written into the fabric of
the period since 2016 that it has become
a commonplace in discussions about the
business environment or over plans for
the next couple of years to add the caveat
‘depending what happens’ to allow for the
multitude of possibilities occasioned by
the prevailing political uncertainty.
And yet, by the time that you are
reading these words, there will be one

certainty at least. Namely, that at 11pm
on January 31st, the United Kingdom
will have left the European Union. That
fact alone is why I have broken my selfimposed
silence on the matter.
This will not be the end of the story, of
course. The exact nature of our future
trading relationship with the EU will not
begin to be clear for another 11 months.
So, the uncertainty is not completely
dispelled. However, one big imponderable
has at least been removed and it is to
be hoped that UK businesses will now
at be able to plan with some measure of
certainty in this new political landscape.
