Just a few short months ago, it was
possible for business owners to debate
the merits of allowing sta to work
remotely. Today it is simply a fact of life
that they must do so.
Literally overnight, entire industries
were forced to pivot from a position
where ‘can our businesses still operate
if our sta work from home rather than
in an o ce environment?’ went from a
theoretical discussion to a very urgent
practical problem.
of course, depends to no small degree
on the nature of the industry. It has been
easier, for instance, for journalists to work
remotely, since much of what we do is as
easily done from home as from the o ce.
With the addition of video meetings, things
have been able to carry on relatively easily.
Design engineering, on the other hand,
faces its own set of challenges when it
comes to remote working. The rst is
security. Many design engineers work
in commercially sensitive areas where
the security of les is of paramount
importance. Remote working may make
this even more di cult, if not impossible.
Equally, the CAD-centric nature of
modern design engineering means that
the ability to seamlessly and smoothly
handle huge, graphic-intensive les is
essential in a modern design environment.
However, this is simply not possible via
many domestic set-ups.
Of course many businesses have
adapted to this successfully and there

are platforms available that address these
issues. However, whether it has been
possible to change working practices this
quickly is a massive question.
As things stand, the world is engaged in a
forced experiment in how it does businesses.
Those that adapt best to this environment
are those that will thrive.
