SMMT Industry Forum online training push
Value stream mapping and similar online training is available from SMMT
Industry Forum. Those interested should visit https://is.gd/waquki
In addition to the range of
digitally delivered, instructor-led
courses, Industry Forum has
launched a variety of flexible
'e-learning' courses – bite-sized
15-minute modules, with five test
questions at the end of each
module and, in some cases, online
examinations to achieve an
industry-recognised certification.
Sustainable
future plan
A lack of job security has led to a
quarter (24%) of the UK workforce
turning to online courses to learn
new skills or expand current
knowledge during the Coronavirus
pandemic, a survey by The Open
University has found.
Measured against the 35.83
million jobs in the UK, half (49%) of
all current UK workers have been
affected by uncertainty and five
million (14%) expect the pandemic
to dramatically change the skills
required to fulfil their roles by the
time they return to work. Survey
participants also urged employers to
give direction as to which courses
are best to ensure new skills
become valued assets.
SMMT Industry Forum has
responded by launching virtual,
instructor-led courses, as well as a
range of self-directed, online
'e-learning' modules, for people
working in automotive
manufacturing.
A number of Industry Forum’s
most popular training courses are
now available remotely. The
instructor-led courses have been
adapted to make them interactive
and engaging when delivered
digitally, and provide full
certification, sanctioned by the
SMMT Oversight office, when
completed.
Sandvik Group member and
cutting tool specialist Dormer
Pramet is making sustainability
an integral part of its business.
The use of new technologies
and ways of working that deliver
value for employees, customers
and suppliers are brought
together under ‘Make the Shift’.
This focuses on four key
areas: Circularity; Climate;
People; and Fair Play. A list of
key actions and objectives is
targeted for delivery by 2030.
These include: increasing
product and packaging recycling;
reducing waste; lowering CO2
impact; halving injury frequency
rate; developing a diverse and
inclusive workforce; and
engaging in community
involvement projects.
Shiftec retools to produce
shielding products
Shiftec, a part of Liberty Engineering,
has re-tooled machinery at its plant
in Willenhall, West Midlands, to
produce safety equipment for social
distancing in vehicles, offices and
industrial workplaces.
Machinery in Willenhall that
would normally be used to
manufacture industrial ink trays and
automotive components has been
adjusted to manufacture products
needed to re-start the economy
safely post-pandemic.
Chris Baugh, managing director
of Shiftec, Willenhall, said:
“Thousands of businesses across
Britain are grappling with the
challenge of keeping employees
safe while resuming their usual
activities. We wanted to do our bit to
back the national re-start by
producing equipment that will help
people to maintain social distancing
– or to protect people where a twometre
gap isn’t possible.
“We’re pleased to have found a
way to make these products at short
notice – it helps keep our equipment
running, and to get our own
employees back to work.”
Products being made by Shiftec
include a driver protection screen –
essential for private hire vehicles or
for commercial drivers who need a
partition between themselves and
passengers in the rear seat.
Additionally, temporary office
partitions are being produced that
can provide a transparent barrier
between desks for office
environments. Floor stencils that
make one-way routes evident are
another product, while full-face
shields are being produced for
workers operating in higher risk
environments.
