BEST USE OF HARD METALS
WINNER
The Garden House, London: KME working with Roles
Broderick Roofi ng
Product:
0.6mm and 0.7mm thick KME TECU “classic”
natural copper was specifi ed to the newbuild
residence in Notting Hill, London.
Project:
The client wanted to showcase a contrast
between traditional copper skills and cuttingedge
design. With every element within the
roof zone handmade to fi t the design, the
curved design of the roof was created by Roles
Broderick Roofi ng to allow light to fi ll the space
from a single roofl ight.
Designed to be maintenance-free, and have
a long design life, the client also wanted to see
the roof change in appearance over time, from
the original orange colour to a chocolate brown
in the fi rst six to 12 months, and then to a green
patina in 30 to 40 years’ time.
As the client and architect wanted to see
the hand workings, copper was chosen due to
its malleability to achieve the curves of the roof
and the ability to curve the metal in both planes.
Access to the site was diffi cult because the
building was sandwiched in the back garden of
an existing property, and surrounded by other
buildings on all sides.
The building was covered with scaffold over
the roof, which provided the roofers with a dry
and safe working environment.
All deliveries for the project were on a “just
in time basis”, and had to be delivered on small
vehicles, due to the location of the property in
central London. All deliveries also had to have
prior notice and follow a traffi c management
plan.
The roof was completed on time and on
budget. The entire project was carried out by
Roles Broderick Roofi ng’s senior charge-hand
and two hard metal apprentices at NVQ 2 and
NVQ 3 stages.
A spokesperson from the company said:
“The two apprentices are unlikely to ever be
involved in such a complex project in their
working career, as the roof was truly a one-off.”

HIGHLY
COMMENDED
Abbey Wood
Station, London:
VMZINC working
with Roles
Broderick Roofi ng
Product:
0.7mm VM QUARTZ-ZINC standing seam
roofi ng with 1mm VM QUARTZ interlocking
wall panels were fi tted.
Project:
With a lifespan in excess of 40 years, VM
ZINC was chosen for its longevity and the
fact that it can be curved.
As the site was a live railway line, and
a large part of the project was trackside,
the installation involved working from
mobile elevated platforms for the majority
of the work, and required a large element
of night work when the track was closed.
The management of complex operational
logistics in conjunction with Balfour Beatty
and Railtrack was also required.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS
“This project really has the wow factor because of the skill and craftsmanship that has gone into it. It is a
complex installation that has been carried out by young apprentices who have demonstrated their commitment
to learning their craft. This project won on its own merit, and whilst the apprentices weren’t pivotal in making
our decision, it was certainly important.”
