Underwood House: SIGA Slate working with SIG Design & Technology and
DM Roofi ng & Roughcasting
Project:
Underwood House, Craigie is a 19th century
Grade B listed residential property in
Dundonald, Ayrshire. The 500m2 pitched roof
features a half turret with six dormers and
sweeping/curved valley details.
While the property had been refurbished,
and an extension had been built, the property
was tiled in two types of Welsh slate, which
is not the uniform appearance of Scottish
Ballachulish slate that is used in the local
area.
SIGA 120 provides an indigenous
alternative to traditional Scottish slate. It
is supplied in random-width diminishing
courses, and comes in a 9mm dark blue grey,
textured slate.
After discussions with Historic
Environmental Scotland, SIGA 120 random
diminishing slate was specifi ed by the
architect for the project.
DM Roofi ng & Roughcasting was chosen
by the main contractor, G Middleton of East
Kilbride, to carry out the refurbishment of all
the roofs to the property.
The fi rst task was to remove the existing
roofi ng materials, including the original
horsehair felt. Due to nail rot, some of the
slates had become dislodged.
Once the underfelting was complete, work
began by sorting the slate into three groups
based on equal thickness – heavy for the
bottom rows, medium, and then thin to deliver
a visually ‘even fl ow’.
Any slate that was twisted or bowed, was
used for eave or top slates, or cut for half
slates, valleys or chimneys.
The pitched slate roof on this project is
covered by SIG’s 75-year warranty.
DM Roofi ng & Roughcasting’s agreed
programme was 14 weeks, which was
achieved. However, the roofi ng contractor
experienced some challenges along the way.
The turret with the dormer stack
presented a challenge as each tile needed to
be cut at an angle, so to work to the correct
details, and the sweeping valleys had to meet
the BS 5534 installation criteria.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS
“This is an impressive building, whereby a considerable amount of complex detailing was
carried out to a very high standard. The degree of diffi culty in working with random slates, rather than
standard slates, made this project challenging. It was also an excellent opportunity for young talent to
experience traditional roofi ng methods.”
