RISING STAR OF THE YEAR
WINNER
Tom Thompson, slate and tiler, Roundway Roofi ng
Tom is currently a roof tiler, installing
complete roof systems, which includes: fi xing
roofl ights, fi tting different fl ashings to lead
abutments, and working to current Building
Regulations and standards.
In addition, Tom is also responsible for
organising work schedules for himself and
others, and has shown his intent to learn
and expand his abilities, thereby not limiting
himself to tiling roofs – he takes every
opportunity to acquire new skills.
Punctual and contentious, Tom has
earned a good understanding of roofi ng
practices and of his colleagues. He
demonstrates good organisational skills, and
is willing to help all aspects of the labour
around him. Tom’s tiling knowledge is very
good, and he is open to learning new skills
and helping others.
Since Tom started to learn about
lead-work, he has exceeded expectations
and improved his grasp of the techniques and
qualities required for these tasks, producing
work to a very high standard.
His personable and supportive nature has
benefi ted the team as a whole, and has even
helped his colleagues to work better together.
Whilst Tom has only recently joined
Roundway Roofi ng, during this time he has
already made a great impact. In addition to his
roofi ng skills, he has proved to be an excellent
team player. This is of great benefi t to the
business, when it comes to standards of
delivery and for his colleagues who now work
as a more cohesive and effective team.
Through Tom’s example, the team has
taken on-board his can-do attitude and ways
of working. A spokesperson from Roundway
Roofi ng, said: “In Tom, we have a team
member that is also willing to learn at every
opportunity and to share this with those
around him. A recent example of this is Tom’s
completion of an asbestos course and how he
has shared this learning with me.
“He is an asset to the company and a
positive infl uence on the whole team which, in
turn, uplifts everyone’s daily work ethics and
morale, as well as creating a positive impact
on the end results of every job completed.”
After achieving ‘Highly Commended’
in the BMI Redland Apprentice of the Year
2018 competition, Tom has been inspired to
become self-employed, with aspirations to
earn the qualifi cations to train and coach upand
coming roofers.
He said: “I have gained inspiration from
my previous employer, Andy King, my college
tutor Alan Lander, and the BMI Apprentice of
the Year assessors, to follow a roofi ng career,
not only on the roof, but in the classroom as
well.
“My background is military and the skills
I learned instructing in the army has also
infl uenced my goal to become a trainer. I have
a keen interest in incorporating mental health
awareness into my courses to greater serve
the needs of the next generation.
“The next steps for me are to develop
a good reputation for my trade and gain
experience as a self-employed roofer, actively
seeking the tools I will need to become an
infl uential roofi ng systems educator.”
