BEST USE OF A RAINWATER SYSTEM
WINNER
Self-build at End Rigg, Angus: Marley Alutec working with George Martin Builders
Product:
The Evolve Deepfl ow aluminium gutter system
from Marley Alutec has been developed to
meet the demands of both the building owner
and installer. Other profi le systems in the
Evolve range include Half Round, Box and
Ogee.
Combining high fl ow-rate performance
with fast and easy installation, Evolve includes
a life expectancy of 50 years; is near zero
maintenance as only periodic aesthetic
cleaning is required; and made from marine-
grade aluminium, which means that it is
durable, strong, and highly corrosion-resistant,
so that it will never rust or need repainting.
Project:
The newbuild property in the east of Scotland
put Marley Alutec’s Evolve Deepfl ow range of
aluminium rainwater systems to the test, with
its contemporary design and unusual roofl ine.
The 500m² property, which is owned by
David Maxwell, managing director of George
Martin Builders, incorporates a curved roofl ine
with a section of guttering with a positive
gradient to accommodate the front entrance.
Marley Alutec’s Evolve Deepfl ow guttering
in heritage black was installed. Commenting
on the self-build project, David said: “When
building my own home, I was very conscious
that I didn’t want to compromise on quality and
that the impact on the environment was kept
to a minimum. With this in mind, Marley Alutec
fi tted the brief perfectly.”
The design and location of the house
presented two main challenges for the
rainwater system, but Marley Alutec provided
the most appropriate solution, as David
explained: “The fi rst challenge was the
curved roofl ine, which we overcame by using
a sequence of straight 600mm segments and
angles.”
The second challenge was the strength and
durability needed from the guttering due to the
heavy snowfall commonly experienced in the
region. David explained: “From experience,
I knew that Alutec’s products, despite being
exceptionally lightweight, were robust enough
to withstand the Scottish elements. Not only
this, but for aesthetic reasons, I decided to
hang chains from the guttering instead of
fi tting downpipes. This meant the guttering
had to be extra strong to cope with both
the weight of a deep snow covering and the
hanging chains.”
The project was completed on time as per
the client’s schedule, and Marley Alutec’s
technical team assisted fully by creating a
bespoke solution as per David’s requirements.
Marley Alutec’s area sales manager visited
the site regularly to make sure the installation
was going smoothly and answered any other
questions.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS
“You don’t see this type of roof very often, and the way in which the guttering was used on this project was
very clever and very complex because of the size of the roof. Overall, the way in which the team tackled the
drainage system was very clever, and architecturally it looks excellent.”
