JANUARY 2020 COMMENT
Let’s get down
to business
A very happy new year and welcome to the fi rst issue of
CHRIS BECK, EDITOR chris.beck@markallengroup.com
Manufacturing Management of the new decade. Whether you have
survived the fi rst few weeks of your resolution or broke it on the
2nd, this year promises to be one that requires discipline and focus.
The General Election and Boris Johnson’s surprisingly large victory
seem to be all anyone has spoken about in recent weeks, in amongst the
helpings of turkey and sprouts. Whatever your political leanings are, from
a purely business perspective such a large majority will help provide clarity
around the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future – Brexit.
This month’s cover story (p16) looks at exactly what Boris and his
cabinet should be focusing on in the early months of their tenure.
Manufacturers, more than most, thrive on clarity, which has been sorely
lacking in the three and a half years since the referendum. MM’s message
to the government is a simple one: tell us which direction we are heading
in, and we will follow. Until then, the country risks continuing to tread
water – and we can only do that for so long until we get tired and the
lifeboats are called to rescue us. Boris – it’s time to get down to business
and make some important decisions.
June 2020 also sees the long-awaited return of the Manufacturing
Management Show (p32), at its new home of the NEC in Birmingham.
As well as an exhibiton, delegates will enjoy a high-level conference, the
programme for which is being curated as we speak. If your site is doing
something ground-breaking and you would like to be considered for a
conference slot, please do email me at the address above. C.Beck
