SEPTEMBER 2020 COMMENT
From tiny
acorns...
CHRIS BECK, EDITOR chris.beck@markallengroup.com
Whisper it, but there’s a feelgood atmosphere returning to
the industry again.
The Purchasing Managers’ Index continues to rise, trade
shows and exhibitons are able to recommence from October and sites
are beginning to return to full capacity.
Some, of course, would argue that feeling never went away – not
least, biking entrepreneurs, VOLT, whose brand new factory adorns
this month’s cover story (p12). Their tale is an interesting one, and a
demonstration of the ingenuity and never-say-die attitude that means
the manufacturing sector will come back stronger.
Of course, any recovery isn’t going to happen overnight, but, it
has to start somewhere, and the signs are good. The risk of local
lockdowns, second waves and more economic disruption is still there,
though, and industry leaders must be resilient and prepared for the
worst. Expect more bumps in the road before we reach the sunny
uplands – not least, an increasingly likely No Deal Brexit.
We’re here to help, though. Look out for plenty of ‘rebuilding’
content from Manufacturing Management over the coming months,
including our regular Live Panel events, available to watch on the MM
website. Later this year, we’ll be publishing the fi ndings of our New
Normal survey (which should be in inboxes as you read this), where
we’ll discover exactly how prepared manufacturers are for the new
world, and whether the optimism of recent weeks is here to stay.
Enjoy this issue, and, as always, stay safe.
