APRIL 2020 COMMENT
Life
goes on...
CHRIS BECK, EDITOR chris.beck@markallengroup.com
As we all get used to a new way of working and an uncertain future,
life must go on. Manufacturers have a role to play in this – not just
the food & drink companies keeping supermarket shelves stocked
up or those in the medical supply chain supporting the work of the NHS
in tackling the unprecedented crisis, but on shopfl oors across the country.
This is a time for pulling together and helping others – individuals and
businesses – get through diffi cult times. The economy is facing a threat
unlike anything seen since WWII. Manufacturers are, however, resilient –
your problem-solving and agile thinking is unrivalled amongst business.
This mindset is already apparent: the immediate response to the
government’s call for assistance with the manufacture of respirators (see
p10) has shown the kind of spirit that will help industry not just survive
the coming weeks and months, but be in a position to thrive when we
reach a stable footing again.
One of my favourite parts of this job is going out and meeting
manufacturers, learning more about the work they’re doing and how
they’re doing it. For the time being, though, I’m cooped up and unable
to get out and see you all. However, I’m still on the lookout for news and
opinion – whether it’s a 50-word comment on something coming from
Westminster, or a half-hour phone conversation about lean effi ciencies on
the shopfl oor.
Now, more than ever, it’s vital to share news about the good work being
done. Whatever you’ve got, keep it coming; I’ll be listening. You can reach
me at the details above. I look forward to hearing from you.
Stay safe.
