FEBRUARY 2019 COMMENT
Creating
a legacy
Cast your minds back to the summer of 2012, and the sense of
positivity that swept the nation as London hosted one of the most
successful Olympic Games in history.
For two magical weeks, we were gripped by sports we’d never heard of
previously – handball, Greco-Roman wrestling and slalom canoeing – and
found ourselves discussing the intricacies of gymnastics at the pub with
our mates (or was that just me?).
All good things must come to an end, though, and all too quickly, the
Olympic circus moved on. And yet, its legacy remains, even beyond the
nice, shiny stadium for West Ham United. More people are taking part in
sport than they were before the Olympics, and our national sports teams
have gone from strength-to-strength. PE teaching in schools has improved
and children are now, on average, much healthier (https://bit.ly/2GjXhhw).
So what has all this go to do with manufacturing? You may remember
that 2018 was the designated Year of Engineering, with events taking
place across the country to promote the good work the sector does. At
the time, I welcomed the idea, saying it “had the potential to make a real
diff erence.” There’s no doubt that the activities of the past 12 months have
been successful, but the real test is still to come. It’s vital that the powers
that be don’t use the end of 2018 as an excuse to shift the focus.
A large part of the successful legacy of the Olympics was that everyone,
from the public to government (of all colours), was behind it. If we want to
see a manufacturing legacy in the UK, the same will need to apply here. C.Beck
