Getting back
to normal
A s we approach what are hopefully the final stages of
the pandemic, questions of what the working world
will look like afterwards become more urgent. Until
now, they’ve had a theoretical quality, but that’s
changing now. We’re going to have to move from
discussing the ‘new normal’ to living in it.
Remote working is something many of us have had to get used to over
the last few months. In fact, many would argue that has been one of the
few upsides of the pandemic, meaning as it has the removal of some of
the more irksome aspects of working life such as hours spent commuting.
Where remote working represents more of a challenge, however, is
in the collaboration between colleagues that is necessary to creativity
and teamwork. At the beginning of lockdown, many assumed this would
suffer, as workers left in isolation failed to communicate with their
colleagues. In general, though, this has not proved to be the case – indeed,
many businesses have reported that communication has in fact improved,
as staff members no longer exchange ideas just with their immediate
colleagues, but with colleagues from across the organisation.
More challenging, though, is the question of training. Of course it is
possible to have discussions with individuals that explain to them how
processes work and telling them what to do, but the question remains
whether these can or will ever be substitutes for
being there.
The whole workforce is having to address
what their new reality is going to look like.
There can be no doubt that it throws up
new challenges for all of us.
