News broke last Wednesday that
April's MACH 2020 exhibition is to
be postponed until January of next
year, due to the coronavirus issue.
The show will take place at the
NEC, Birmingham from 25-28
January. The Manufacturing
Technologies Association (MTA),
which owns and runs the MACH
exhibition, put out a statement that
said: "In order to minimise the risks
to visitors and exhibitors, the event
will now take place 25-28 January
2021. The show will still be held in
the same halls at the NEC, and all
exhibitors that had booked for
MACH in April will be offered the
same stand space at the
rescheduled event. The MTA team is
currently in the process of
contacting all 550 exhibitors to
discuss their participation."
James Selka, MTA CEO, said:
“We believe that this decision,
which has not been taken lightly, is
in the best interests of the industry
and those who work in it. Our rst
priority is, of course, the health and
safety of the circa 30,000 people
who will visit and work at MACH.
"In addition, we believe that by
moving the show to January 2021
we will offer a better experience for
visitors, and better value for
exhibitors, than by holding it in April
under the conditions likely to be in
Newly formed WH-Lead, based
in Towcester, is the new sole
agent for the UK market for
Leadwell CNC Machines.
The new company is a sister
to Whitehouse Machine Tools, a
long-established agency for
machining centres and CNC
lathes manufactured in Japan,
Germany, Italy and Taiwan.
With immediate effect, WHLead
takes over the sales and
service of Leadwell’s range of
turning centres and vertical
machining centres.
Seamless continuity of
supply in the UK is assured, as
Mike Heapy and Brendan Parrott
from the previous agent, Lead
Precision Machine Tools, have
joined the new organisation,
bringing their expertise.
Manufacturing's digital age
is in line with women's skillset
BAE Systems’ Andrea Thompson
believes that the digital age in
manufacturing sees women more
suited to this environment than they
might have been in the past.
“Women are empowered. Previously,
it was very much men with ‘Type A’
personalities and thinking in a
'group mentality'. Fast-forward 30
years and there are both males and
females with ‘Type A and B’
personalities. They challenge one
another and collaborate. Diversity of
thought and experiences are now
treasured skills. This wasn’t even a
possibility all those years ago.”
Thompson has worked her way
up from supervising on the shop oor
to the top oor and is now managing
director for Europe & International
Programmes at BAE Systems. She is
now aiming to inspire the next
generation of women to follow suit
through her role as chair of the
Made Smarter Commission's North
West Pilot.
Manufacturing has moved away
from its past manual emphasis, she
says, adding: “A completely different
skillset is required. And women have
this. They bring data analytical skills,
along with a forward-thinking,
strategic and innovative approach.”
Today, the manufacturing
industry paints a completely
different picture, Thompson says, no
more so than at at her employer,
BAE Systems.
Of the 10,000 people working
from its Lancashire site, 20% are
women, including 500 engineers.
Almost a quarter of new starters
through BAE’s UK apprenticeship
programmes last year were female,
while the number of women in senior
management positions is rising.
