A breakthrough in
indoor positioning
Following five years of development, the VBOX Indoor Positioning System from Racelogic
allows test engineers to accurately obtain speed and position in the absence of GNSS

The biggest hurdle with these facilities
has been how to measure the speed and
position indoors without any access to
GPS or other satellite-based systems.
Racelogic has solved this problem by
developing VIPS, an extremely precise
GPS replacement system for indoor test
areas, which has a class-leading accuracy
of ±2cm and is compatible with existing
Racelogic VBOX equipment.
VIPS comprises of a number of Ultra-
Wideband (UWB) beacons that are

development of modern
vehicles, a reliable and
repeatable environment is essential
when testing tyres, braking systems,
validating ADAS sensors and developing
autonomous driving systems. You cannot
rely on the weather to create your
perfect test conditions, and therefore
increasingly more tests are being
conducted inside custom-built facilities
which simulate many different kinds
of climate, enabling real-world scenarios

surveyed. The beacons communicate
with a UWB receiver mounted on the
roof of the vehicle, which then computes
a triangulated position. This data is
combined with the data from a highly
accurate Inertial Measurement Unit
(IMU) inside the receiver, providing a
real-time position, speed and attitude
solution. All values are generated at
100Hz, in real-time on the vehicle.
VIPS can be used on up to two
vehicles simultaneously, allowing AEB
and other ADAS-style tests to be carried
out. For more complex ADAS tests,
