6 British APCO
British APCO has launched the inaugural BAPCO Awards to
recognise the endeavour, enterprise and energy of the UK’s
public safety community. The association said the awards aim
to celebrate, congratulate and showcase the achievements
of public safety professionals and share best practices with
the global community.
Categories include use of technology to support public
safety, inspirational leader, best use of technology in a disaster,
implementation of a new solution, and more. Nominations
are open until the end of February, with winners set to be
announced at a ceremony in London on 11 June.

5 APD Control Room Awards
The fi nalists have been announced for the APD Control
Room Awards. Now in its third year, the awards shine a
light on individuals and teams who go above and beyond.
A total of almost 400 nominations were received from
80 organisations for the 2020 awards, with each nominee
receiving a “badge of honour”.
The judging panel – made up of those with vast
experience of working in or with the emergency services
and critical control organisations – shortlisted three entrants
in 11 categories. The winners will be announced at a
ceremony taking place in Leicestershire on 5 March.

O2 has unveiled plans to grow its IoT
o ering with the introduction of an LTE-M
network. The company said the network
will help unlock widespread uptake
of long-life IoT battery devices out in
thefi eld.
Paul O’ Sullivan, director of wholesale
at O2, said: “We know that businesses
looking into IoT solutions want answers
now, not in fi ve to ten years. Introducing
a nationwide LTE-M network in 2020
will help unlock low-power use cases we
haven’t seen before.”
The 50th cell site recently opened in
Slough and a wider rollout is planned for
this year.
8 Cotel & Icom
Cotel has selected the Icom IP501H for its mobile service fl eet
communications, after carrying out extensive equipment trials within the
UK and Europe over a period of six months. The company found the PTT
over Cellular (PoC) device provides immediate high-quality communication,
with excellent fi delity and audio quality, between its fi xed and mobile
usergroups.
The PoC device means management can bypass the conventional phone
system to quickly assign service-related tasks. This has helped to speed up
service and repair processes across its fl eet as technical information and
the location of spare parts can be communicated instantly.
