Anyone that caught the second leg Liverpool-Barcelona game last
month will know how special it was. Magic was in the air at Anfield as
Liverpool, 3-0 down from its first leg, won 4-0 (4-3 on aggregate) and
progressed to the Champions League final.
Messi – the ‘world’s best’ and arguably the face of Barcelona – could not
make a dent in game. Liverpool, meanwhile, held its own, working as a team to
overcome what most people said was impossible.
No, I’m not a Liverpool supporter (up the Millwall!), but the game showed
something that everyone in industry can and should be thinking about –
teamwork and support.
The sector is, in some way or another, always being warned about the
challenges it faces, whether political, financial, environmental, or related to
labour or health and safety. Indeed, Liverpool showed that by working as a
unit, even the toughest challenges can be overcome. This message can be
applied to industry. That is why it has been pleasing to see, especially in recent
months, different companies, of different sizes, partnering up to improve the
future of industry or being more open and willing to provide help to others.
Some of the news stories in this issue are a good example: HP and
Siemens have announced an expansion of their strategic alliance to help
transform businesses with industrial additive manufacturing (see p9), and
Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and Schaeffler Technologies have announced
a global strategic partnership to support companies with measures within
the framework of digital transformation (see also p9). OE’s feature on the
Advanced Multiphase Facility in May is another example (www.is.gd/opuxuc).
People are better when they work together. Wear the engineering badge
with pride, get out there, and dominate industry, together.
