MARCH 2019 COMMENT
Show a
little respect
The fi rst week of March marks a nationwide, cross-sector focus on
the role apprentices play in keeping our businesses running. Now
into its 12th year, National Apprenticeship Week plays a vital role
in promoting the value of this method of training and recruitment.
Manufacturers have, of course, long been fans of apprenticeships.
Indeed, a shining example of this can be found in this month’s cover
story (p16), where I pay a visit to electric motor manufacturer, YASA.
Their links with academia and a long-running apprentice degree
programme have reaped rewards – two of their brightest sparks, both
of whom spent time at the company during their formative years in
higher education, were amongst the winners of last year’s Manufacturing
Champions Awards.
Companies like YASA are a demonstration of a key point made by
Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, at the recent Make UK annual
conference (p24). He pointed to the dire need to change perceptions
of vocational work amongst the UK public. Compare the attitudes here
to those in a country like Germany, where engineers are held to a
similar level of reverance as doctors and teachers.
The planned introduction of T-Levels in 2020, whereby schools and
colleges will be able to off er technical qualifi cations alongside traditional
A-Levels is a start – but only if they are treated in the same way by
parents, employers and higher education providers alike. It’s time to
invest in our people, and prepare the industry for the future.
