Although critics of carbon offsetting point to the
fact that it takes around 15 years for a tree planted to
mature enough and remove meaningful amounts of
CO² from the air, for many companies and business
aviation users it is the most accessible way to
minimize their carbon footprint. “It’s certainly more
helpful than doing nothing at all,” said Zaher.
According to Zaher, researching the data on fuel
burn rates and working out a formula to
calculate business jet flight emissions
was a labor intensive task. He said,
“We’ve done the legwork to make
it easy for a company to offer
offsetting to its customers in
a timely manner without any
additional cost involved.
“It is our hope that companies
install this resource on their
website, so that it reaches the
highest number of potential
users who wish to minimize their
environmental impact.”

Policies and regulations aimed at curbing carbon
emissions from aircraft are already being introduced,
such as the International Civil Aviation Organization’s
(ICAO) Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme
for International Aviation (CORSIA). Similar
regulations to curb carbon emissions
have been proposed in the USA and
other countries. Zaher said, “More
developments are not inevitable, but
certainly would not be surprising.
“Private aviation is a frequent
target of ire from climate change
advocates, and it’s important to note
most of those charges are unfair.
“Our industry has a proven record
of successfully reducing carbon
emissions, and it is our hope that regulators
will continue to recognize these efforts in
determining any further CO² reduction policies that
may come to fruition.”
