The FBO is finding new
ways to differentiate
itself through
sustainability projects
We picked two main themes for this issue of
Business Airport International, security and
sustainability. Although the topics are very
different, they are both aspects of aviation operations that
need to be managed effectively for organizations and
customers to benefit from good results.
Security in business aviation is
regulated at international and state
level. The size of the airport has
minimal effect on risk – relatively
smaller airports still often
have large estates to secure
and manage. The measures
and decisions taken on the
ground every day are still
vital to manage security. The
first step is understanding the
regulations, best practices and
conducting security assessments
to identify vulnerabilities. Measures
that decrease security risk could then
include improvements to the security of
access points or training to change employee behavior.
While security is viewed as an immediate risk, climate
change has been seen as long term threat. However, the
number of extreme weather events, such as hurricanes
and flooding is on the rise. Planning and managing the
consequences of extreme weather events has become as
common as dealing with security issues in places such
as Florida and The Bahamas. Charter operators, FBOs
and airports are stepping up preparations and equipment
to ensure operations can continue after a storm and that
help for local communities can get through.
Meanwhile, regulation on environmental
sustainability and carbon emissions continues
to take shape at the international and
domestic levels. Business aviation is
frequently criticized because of the
high carbon footprint of its individuallyfocused
operations.
The sector must robustly reply to
critics and take action on sustainability.
Some companies are already installing
LED lighting, solar panels or using carbon
offsetting schemes. Whether such action
is sufficient to avoid stringent environmental
regulation similar to the regulation seen in areas
such as security remains to be seen. As ever change
is the only thing that is a certainty.
