VAN DONGE & DE ROO
STADIUM, ROTTERDAM,
NETHERLANDS
Proposed plans for a striking redesign
of Dutch soccer club SBV Excelsior’s
home stadium will take multi-function
to a new level as it features four high-rise
buildings extending out of the canopies
of the venue’s stands.
Designed by MoederscheimMoonen
Architects, the expansion of the Van
Donge & De Roo Stadium has been
submitted to Rotterdam city council,
where it proposes an increase of seating
from 4,300 to 6,500, as well as facilities
around the stadium for commercial and
social purposes such as exercise and
meeting spaces.
However, the most interesting aspect
of the proposal is a solution to the city’s
urban housing situation in the form of
mixed-use towers, which could provide
residential units without imposing on the
city’s historical green zones. The towers,
complete with green living roofs, would
be unlike any other integrated residential
development within a stadium and would
become a landmark for the city.
The plan is said to help SBV Excelsior
further enhance the surrounding
neighborhood, and also generate nonsoccer
related income for the club, which
can help realize a future-proof and robust
revenue model.
The architects also collaborated
with urban masterplanners to include
solutions and initiatives for mobility,
diversity of programming and a balanced
use of greenery within the current
landscape of the city.
The plans are currently in the review
process and discussions about the
proposal will continue with third parties
and financiers. It is expected
the development process could last
several years, during which more
detailed designs will be released.
