Miami Dolphins introduce new hygiene and
cleaning standards at Hard Rock Stadium
Hard Rock Stadium and the Global
Biorisk Advisory Council (GBAC),
a division of ISSA, the worldwide
cleaning industry association, have
announced that the venue has
committed to become the rst
public facility to receive GBAC STAR
accreditation. This initiative will serve
as a standard for facilities to
implement cleaning, disinfection
and infectious disease prevention
work practices to control risks
associated with infectious agents.
“When our fans, players and
sta are able to return to Hard Rock
Stadium, we want them to have
peace of mind that we’re doing
everything we can to create the
safest and healthiest environment
possible,” said Miami Dolphins
and Hard Rock Stadium vice
chairman and CEO Tom Gar nkel.
“We didn’t want to create our own
standard, working with GBAC
ensures compliance with critical
guidelines for the highest standard
of cleanliness and it is our hope
that other venues will follow suit
as we navigate through these
unprecedented times.”
In order to earn GBAC STAR
accreditation, Hard Rock Stadium
will complete 20 program elements
with speci c performance and
guidance criteria. It will enable
Hard Rock Stadium to establish and
maintain a cleaning, disinfection,
and infectious disease prevention
program to control and/or minimize
risk associated with infectious agents
for employees, customers, the
community, and the environment.
It will provide assurance and
establish con dence that proper
cleaning, disinfection, and infectious
disease prevention work practices
are in place and implemented.
This will also establish a framework
for communication and raising
awareness of best practices as they
relate to cleaning, disinfection, and
infectious disease prevention.
A number of other sports
facilities have followed to commit
to the GBAC STAR accreditation,
including Lincoln Financial Field
and the Staples Center.
Scotiabank Arena turned into ‘Toronto’s largest kitchen’
to serve frontline workers and support Covid-19 relief
As Covid-19 has forced many sports
stadia and arenas to stand empty,
one initiative in Toronto took
advantage of the large vacant space
at the Scotiabank Arena to serve
meals to frontline health care workers
during the crisis.
Scotiabank Arena, home of
the 2019 NBA Champions Toronto
Raptors and NHL’s Toronto Maple
Leafs, was turned into Toronto’s
largest kitchen as Maple Leaf Sports
& Entertainment and several key
partners prepared as many as 10,000
meals a day for frontline health care
workers and community agencies in
the Greater Toronto Area.
“Scotiabank Arena normally
serves as a gathering place for fans
to be entertained and cheer on their
teams, but as the world deals with
the overwhelming impact of the
Covid-19 pandemic, our arena will
serve as a place for people to come
together and support our community
when it is most in need,” said
Michael Friisdahl, president & CEO of
MLSE. “In a time of crisis like we are
experiencing, many di erent needs
emerge, and we saw this as a chance
to use our facilities and engage our
people to serve our community. We
are grateful to MLSE’s employees,
our teams through the Team Toronto
Fund and the Maple Leafs Alumni for
their donations and our generous
partners for helping answer the call
and providing the resources needed
to ll an important need at this
critical time.”
Scotiabank Arena, with its
numerous food preparation facilities
and large arena oor has been used
to prepare and assemble the meal
packages. MLSE’s chefs and food and
beverage sta , along with employees
from di erent departments within
the company, are working together
on this program as the company’s
sports and entertainment operations
are halted due to the pandemic.
The program has also been
expanded to BMO Field, home of
Major League Soccer’s Toronto FC,
where its food facilities will be used
to increase MLSE’s original goal of
10,000 meals to 13,000 meals served
per day.
