Teacher starting salaries
to increase to £30,000,
2 September
The Department for
Education (DfE) said salaries for
new teachers would rise to
£30,000 by 2022-23.
Teachers are overworked and
teach to hit ridiculous
government targets, not to create
a well-rounded, confident and
able child.
More money is a fantastic
addition, but there are other far
more significant improvements
that need to be made.

Tend to agree with Tim.
Throwing money around to
encourage graduates into teaching
is all very nice, but I know too

Teachers are overburdened by admin t tasks, not just low salaries
many people who have left
teaching after several years
because it’s actually NOT about
the money for them. Teachers are
under so much pressure, and
most parents think teachers have
a cushy job getting loads of
holidays etc. But they don’t see
those teachers working nights,
weekends and during school
holidays to get through their
workload, which tends to be more
about admin and less about
actual teaching!

Hot topic: Fertility
benefits, September HR
Nearly a third (31%) of
employees would like to

treatments such as IVF
and egg freezing, according
to research from Willis
Towers Watson.
Surely it’s easier to change the
way we work than mess about
with women’s fertility? Parental
transition coaching offered to
men and women, and most
particularly to their managers,
can help create the cultural
changes that would negate the
need for postponing childbearing.

Pensions dashboards
FAQ, September HR
It’s worth getting up to speed
with what to expect and how to
answer some of the questions
employees are likely to send
HR’s way.
As the head of HR for a company
that provides pension data
consultancy this article neatly
summarises the collision of
my two worlds. We outsource our
company pension to
Standard Life, so it will be
their job to ensure they make my
staff ’s data available to the
pensions dashboards.
But for companies who have
their own pension the onus will
be on them. We work with lots of
these employers and see a range
of data – from sophisticated

My @hrmagazine comment today on
starting salaries for teachers. May help
recruitment for a while but will have less
impact on retention until workload & pupil
