Move of the month
The Royal Star & Garter Homes
has appointed Kate Silver as its
director of people. The charity
cares for ex-service personnel
with dementia.
Silver joins The Royal Star &
Garter Homes from the Ministry
of Defence, where she worked for
four years, most recently as HR
deputy director and before that
HR chief operating officer.
Prior to that she worked for the
Cabinet Office for two years as
programme director, where she
was responsible for all work on
leadership and governance.
Silver has been involved with
the Royal Air Force Air Cadets for
20 years. She is currently chair of
trustees for her local squadron.
I decided to make the move
because... I was ready
for a change and to take
everything I had learnt and
bring it together in a director
of people role. This wasn’t
an easy decision. I loved the
Civil Service but was
ready to test myself in a
new sector.
I knew The Royal Star &
Garter Homes was the right
place for me when... I had
to think about the kind of
organisation I wanted to work
for. I settled on the charity sector
and then saw this role at The
Royal Star & Garter Homes. It
was the only one I applied for
and I knew it was the right one
when I walked into one of our
homes and felt the joy.
This was confirmed when I met
the CEO and senior team. Their
warmth, dedication, curiosity
and desire to continually improve
are infectious. It is a privilege to
play a small part in that.
I’m most excited about...
The breadth of the role and the
potential to learn and develop.
My biggest challenge in
the new role will be... Not
bringing my assumptions and
biases with me. After so long
in one system I will have to
guard against transferring my
assumptions from that system
to this one.
The biggest lesson I’ve
learnt from my previous
roles has been... So many!
Today the one in my head is that
people generally want to do a
good job. Their intent is positive
and we could all do with being
a little more forgiving of
each other.
The toughest point of my
career has been... Spending
11 months in a role that wasn’t
right for me because I ‘ran
from’ a role rather than ‘running
to’ one. I learnt so much about
myself, including how to stay
resilient, and I made some
fantastic friends but it was
hard. Since then I have always
listened to my Dad’s advice when
changing roles.
If I achieve one thing in
my new role... Which one to
pick from my list?! I would like
The Royal Star & Garter Homes
to be seen as the pinnacle for
strategic workforce planning in
the sector, including talent and
leadership development.
