foreword
Welcome to the rst of two
volumes of Auditoria to be
published for 2020. I’m sure
you will be quick to notice
a few subtle changes to the
magazine as we transition
from an annual publication
to one published twice a year, with a stronger
focus on independent features. However,
by popular demand we are retaining our
existing design – just as requested through
our recent reader survey!
I was humbled by the overwhelmingly
positive, warm feedback from you, our readers.
Of the respondents, 46.9% rated the magazine
as ‘excellent’ and no-one rated it below ‘good’.
Readers also spend a lot of their precious
time reading Auditoria – 33.6% read for more
than an hour and 38.9% spend 31-60 minutes.
A er they’ve nished, 58.9% retain the
magazine for reference, and 29.2% estimate
their copy was read by 3-5 people.
e survey was also really useful in shaping
this issue’s content. It highlighted demand for
more features addressing industry challenges,
so you’ll nd in-depth articles on protecting
performers’ hearing (page 16) and on venue
security (page 42) in this issue – two topics
of great importance. Likewise, we’ve created
a product roundup, for seats (page 22), and
a pictorial collection of new designs (page 8)
in response to your feedback.
Case studies and interviews remain very
popular. You can learn all about e Shed,
New York, on page 10, and about Hangzhou
Yuhang Opera, China, on page 28. I also had
the pleasure of speaking with ISPA’s David Baile
and Anthony Sargent of Toronto’s Luminato
Festival of Creativity for our preview of ISPA’s
New York Congress (page 48). I hope to meet
many of you at the event in January 2020.
Finally, according to our survey, readers
also regularly use news websites to gather
information about the industry – 43.4% do
this at least once a week. is has informed
our decision to launch a news website of our
own: www.auditoria-magazine.com. is is
a resource to support you in keeping abreast
of all the latest technologies, new venue designs
and refurbishment projects between our print
issues. ere will be regular features, videos
and quizzes, plus an events section and a full
archive of back issues.
I’d love your feedback on all we’ve done
to ensure Auditoria remains an invaluable
platform for the industry; so please don't
hesitate to get in touch.
