Engineering
Skills for a
Smarter World
Charlie Blair
Managing Director
Gravitricity Ltd
Charlie is developing a novel energy
storage technology, to help the grid
maximise the energy revolution in
renewables, while giving disused
mineshafts a new lease of life.
Gravitricity’s patented technology is
based on a simple principle; raising
and lowering a heavy weight to store
and release energy.
During times of high renewable energy
generation and low demand, electricity
turns motors to lift a weight of up to
5000 tonnes.
A new engineering skills organisation,
innovating to develop the skills we all
need to succeed, today and tomorrow.
During high demand but low generation
the system reverses, dropping the
weight to turn generators within the
winches, returning electricity to the grid.
