Ericsson acquires Cradlepoint to accelerate 5G for enterprise
ERICSSON HAS AGREED to
acquire Cradlepoint, a provider
of wireless edge WAN 4G and 5G
enterprise solutions. It says the
investment is key to its ongoing
strategy of capturing market
share in the rapidly expanding
5G enterprise space. The two
companies have collaborated
for more than a decade, starting
with the launch of 4G in the U.S.
market.
Cradlepoint will become a
fully owned subsidiary of
Ericsson while continuing to
operate under its existing
brand. Founded in 2006,
Cradlepoint is headquartered in
Boise, Idaho, and has more than
650 employees. It operates a
research and development
center in Silicon Valley,
California, as well as offices in
the United Kingdom and
Australia.
Börje Ekholm, president and
CEO, Ericsson, said, “The
acquisition of Cradlepoint
complements our existing
offerings and is key to our
strategy of helping customers
grow the value of their 5G
network investments.”
George Mulhern, CEO and
chairman of Cradlepoint (left),
added, “We have led the way in
bringing the power of cellular
networks and technologies to
enterprise and public sector
customers – helping them
connect beyond the limits of
traditional wired WANs.
Ericsson, with its global 5G
leadership, is a great match for
us and I am very excited to
continue to scale and expand
our business together.”
The acquisition price
amounts to an enterprise value
of USD 1.1 b. with the transaction
expected to close before the
end of Q4 2020, subject to
closing conditions.
ENREACH ROLLS OUT CLOUD PBX INTEGRATION
ENREACH WILL NOW deliver its hosted cloud
telephony and collaboration solution to UK-based
Network Telecom. This follows Enreach’s
acquisition of Network Telecom last year; Network
Telecom previously made Enreach’s OSS/BSS and
online meeting solutions available to the UK
market.
Enreach has said this particular roll-out marks
an important milestone in its integration strategy
across the Enreach group.
Koen van Geffen, the company’s CTO (above),
commented, “Our cloud platform is made from a
selection of best-of-breed technologies that
seamlessly integrate for the best user experience.
Thanks to the synergies between all the products
in the group, we are able to quickly deploy new
functionality and make it available to a growing
number of countries and users.”

O2 expands its
5G network
O2’s 5G network is now
live in Lincoln, and parts of
Tyne & Wear and Surrey. At
a time when local families,
communities and businesses
are recovering from the
impact of the Covid-19
pandemic, O2 said that the
continued rollout of its next
generation network is crucial
in building up the UK’s digital
infrastructure to help people
stay connected and support
the economy.
Brendan O’Reilly, CTO at
O2, said, “We’re excited to be
switching on our 5G network
across three new areas
today, which will unlock the
exciting benefits of next
generation connectivity for
customers and businesses.
O2 customers with
5G-enabled devices will now
be able enjoy the benefits of
fifth generation connectivity
in the following areas: Tyne
& Wear (in Jarrow, Blaydon,
Washington and Tynemouth),
Surrey (in Chipstead, Staines
and Weybridge) and Lincoln.
O2 says it is also investing
£2 million a day to improve
its 4G network, which is
now available in over 19,200
towns, cities and villages.
Improvements to its 4G
network are part of its plans
to bring connectivity to rural
communities across Britain
through the Shared Rural
Network.
