One big difference between the two is that the AS2 will have
windows and the S-512 will instead have ‘ultraHD’ screens to
support its aerodynamic and fuel-saving targets.
Aerion highlights cabin sound as an important aspect of the
supersonic jet’s development. “Our objective is for cabin sound levels
below 47db without active noise cancelling,” says Scott Kinser, vice
president, worldwide and logistics, Aerion.
The AS2’s cabin seats will feature individual air conditioning,
massage settings and precision adjustability. To support its customers’
requirements for entertainment and productivity, Aerion is targeting
3D surround sound, lightweight OLED 4K and 8K displays with video
conferencing and high-speed wi-fi.
While Spike is targeting entry into service in 2025, and Aerion
in 2026, the FAA is collaborating with ICAO and other authorities
to develop noise and emissions standards. The entry-into-service
predictions assume no delays during the certification process.
ELECTRIC FLIGHT
The eVTOLs in development include models from China’s Ehang and
Germany’s Volocopter, as well as Airbus’ CityAirbus and Bell’s Nexus
concept. Some have hybrid propulsion systems, others are all-electric.
Electric and hybrid-electric aircraft technologies and sustainable fuels
are being advanced by various initiatives, governments and companies.
