OCTOBER 2019
STATE OF PLAY
W e’ve featured many fascinating designs
over the years, but one type of project
has proven particularly elusive: the
head-of-state completion. So imagine my delight
in being able to bring all the details of one such
jet to you. The project in question is a BBJ
operated by the government of the Netherlands,
and it features tons of quirky details celebrating
the nation’s culture, as well as some high-tech
communications equipment. The jet was bought
through EU tender, using taxpayers’ money,
hence why pictures and details are in the public
domain. Turn to page 18 to dive in!
I was also delighted earlier this month to be
able to visit Flying Colours again, in Canada.
The company is celebrating its 30th anniversary
this year, and the story of how it has grown
in expertise from paint jobs and small-scale
refurbishments to large-cabin completions
is inspiring. That’s not to mention its stillexpanding
footprint in three countries, including
a huge hangar being built in Peterborough,
Canada, that will have capacity for jets up to the
A220. I’ve summarised the company’s rise in six
key milestones, which you can read from page 52.
Also in this issue you can learn how
Bombardier has updated the Learjet 75 (page 26);
compare it with the market’s other light jets (page
34); see how electric propulsion is influencing
interior choices for Eviation’s Alice (page 40);
and delve into an exploration of other new
aircraft types that business jets could share the
skies with in the future (page 46).
Speaking of other types of transport, I have
some exciting news to share. The team behind
this magazine is launching another sister title,
to serve those creating maritime interiors. Cruise
Liner Interiors International will be published
from December 2019, and as the editor at the
helm of both titles, I hope to facilitate the sharing
of great ideas between the two sectors, where
applicable. After all, both are striving to create
a wonderful experience for passengers. Please
don’t hesitate to get in touch with me for further
details, and you can also enjoy the new website,
