ANNUAL SHOWCASE 2019 Railway Interiors International 11
REGIOJET’S ELF.EU
In March 2019, Central
European operator RegioJet
ordered seven PESA low-floor
electric units (Elf.eu), at a cost
of €20m (US$22m), to operate
in the Ústí nad Labem region
of the Czech Republic.
Deliveries are scheduled
to commence in the second
half of 2021. In the meantime,
RegioJet will begin operations
on these lines in December
2019 with a fleet of Regio
628 DMUs acquired from
DB. These trains will be
replaced when the Elf.eu
units come on line.
The Elf.eu trains will feature
free wi-fi, 230V sockets,
air-conditioning, a universal
access toilet, an acoustic and
visual passenger information
system and storage for baby
buggies and bicycles.
The floor sits 600mm
(23.6in) above the rail.
VÄSTTRAFIK’S ZEFIRO EXPRESS
In June 2019, Bombardier Transportation won the Brandenburg Design
Award for the exterior and interior design of its Zefiro Express intercity
train for Swedish operator Västtrafik. The exterior was inspired by
Scandinavian design, while inside, the train is designed to be particularly
spacious, with amenities including smart lighting.
The trains will serve the Västra Götaland region of Sweden, which
faces challenging winter conditions. The train’s headlights can operate
in temperatures down to -40°C, and are positioned as high as possible
in accordance with TSI standards. The train also has a specially
designed and particularly large, front-mounted snow plough.
“The development process was closely coordinated between us and
the Bombardier design team and the train’s mock-up is both attractive
and unique,” says Helene Frahm, design lead at Västtrafik. “We look
forward to seeing them in operation and meeting our customers’ needs.”
