BIG INVESTMENT IN NEW YORK
New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation
Authority (MTA) has approved a proposed 2020-
2024 capital programme to invest US$51.5bn
(€47.1bn) over the next five years – including
more than US$40bn (€36.6bn) for New York City
Transit’s subways and buses, plus investments
in the Metro-North Railroad and Long Island
Rail Road. The plan is now under review by
an independent board.
As well as improvements to stations and other
infrastructure, the plan includes the addition of
1,900 new subway cars, 2,400 new buses, 160
new electric M9A cars for the Long Island Rail
Road, and 140 electric M3 cars for the Metro-
North Railroad.

SEAT COMFORT SPECIFICATION
RSSB’s research has led to the
creation of a train seat comfort
specification, accounting for factors
including seat dimensions, legroom,
accessories, compression and hardness,
attractiveness and journey length.
The research is available on SPARK.
First Rail is the first operator to
use elements of the new scale and
methodology in the specification of
new trains. “It’s already proving its
worth,” says Martin Ward, engineering
business development director at First
Rail. “In the past, assessment and
comparison was difficult without a
quantified benchmark to work from.
This research has helped provide
that, and we’ve even been able
apply the method for dimensional
and angle-based seat features, as
well as the seat accessories criteria,
even at a relatively late stage in the
procurement process. I certainly
recommend this work to other
operators and suppliers working on
specifications for future trains.”
