Imagine my horror when an hour after landing in a foreign country recently,
I lost my phone. I was travelling solo, taking in two new cities (with a train
in-between of course!), and had very little internet access for fi ve days. Let’s just
say I struggled! It is remarkable how many people rely on having constant access
to the internet, and even feel entitled to it. We are annoyed when there is no
wi-fi , or if the service is not seamless. In our busy lives, the train is somewhere
we can sit still for once, and with access to the internet, take a break through
social media and entertainment channels; catch up on admin such as paying bills
and ordering groceries; get a headstart on work and read the digital edition of
our favourite magazine. What most don’t understand is that providing this level
of service is technically di cult on a train. In the article from page 24, experts
explore the challenges, and some potential new revenue streams. Getting it right
is one sure way to make your customers happy.
Other features in this issue include an enlightening interview with Joost Van
der Made, who led the design of NS’s Train of the Future (page 30); in-depth
case studies of new trains for Amtrak (page 38) and Caltrain (page 54) of the
USA, and NMBS/SNCB of Belgium (page 16); plus discussion of when to opt
for refurbishment (page 44) and how to get bu et cars right (page 50).
Finally, you may know that Railway Interiors International has a new
publisher, as it was one of 12 titles acquired by the Mark Allen Group from
UKi Media & Events in May 2019. The magazine is produced by the same core
team as before, and we are all very excited for the future. I’m also thrilled to
announce that from December 2019, we will publish the fi rst edition of a sister
title for the maritime sector: Cruise Liner Interiors International. As editor of
both titles, as well as Business Jet Interiors International, I hope to be able to
share the best ideas between the industries, where applicable. If you would like
further details, please get in touch!
