32 BUILT FOR LIFE
How the landscape of
stadium sustainability has evolved
over the past two decades
t’s finally here, people. The Golden Cockerel has
landed. You may recall me saying a few issues back
how I was hoping to have the new Tottenham
Hotspur Stadium adorn the cover of this magazine,
but to due to much-publicized issues with the build, it
wasn’t finished. With a final push from those involved
and its safety checks ticked off, the stadium doors
opened in April, and here it is in all its glory fronting
this issue. Our cover story delves into arguably the most
exciting and important stadium build in the UK since
the new Wembley. Was it worth the wait? You bet.
Ask anyone who’s been lucky enough to visit and
they’ll sing its praises – even ardent rival fans get
green-eyed over Spurs’ new home. What strikes me are
the details that make you realize how antiquated most
soccer stadia in the UK are. Even getting something to
eat or finding your way to your seat is a revolutionary
experience. The club’s motto ‘to dare is to do’ couldn’t be
more apt. They dreamed big, pushed boundaries, raised
standards and they delivered (eventually). With any
hope it will act as a catalyst for other UK stadia to raise
their game.
But am I satisfied? Not entirely. The problem is, many
details of the stadium have been wrapped up in so much
red tape that obtaining access to the juiciest information
of the project hasn’t been the most straightforward of
tasks. I was fully expecting individuals involved with the
project to be shouting from the rooftop about delivering
this landmark but being told “we have to be careful with
what we say” was frustratingly common. Suppliers and
contractors have reportedly been slapped with nondisclosure
agreements and allegedly even warned with
fines if they blab about the build. Then, there was the
little matter of the club managing to reach the final of the
Champions League – the biggest club soccer competition
in the world – for the first time in its history. Of course,
a tremendous achievement for the team, but
understandably, a very busy season for the club.
So, take this as a serialized feature. In this part one,
as it were, we explore the beauty of the stadium’s design
and engineering, while later in the year, we will (with any
luck!) be able to get under its skin to reveal a bit more
behind the build. Besides, there’s so much to talk about
anyway, we thought we’d leave you thirsty for more come
the next issue. You won’t be disappointed.
