FROM THE EDITOR
The fi bre gold-rush
Boris Johnson has been settling himself into 10 Downing Street over the last month and
has quickly dominated the mainstream media headlines with his Brexit strategy funding
announcements. I happened to be in the Openreach o ces in London on the day he
o cially became the Tory Party leader and there was a buzz of anticipation in the air.
In usual Boris fashion, he didn’t mince his words when he recently labelled the current target
to go full bre by 2033 ‘laughably unambitious’. In his regular Telegraph column, he wrote “If we
want to unite our country and our society, we should commit now to delivering full bre to every
home in the land not in the mid 2030’s — but in ve years at the outside.”
e current commitment to bre by e Government is certainly a step in the right direction
and has attracted much investment, but is it enough for a nation trying to
forge a new economic path outside of the EU?
Current estimates put the cost of transitioning the country to full bre
at £30 billion, but e Government hasn’t pledged that amo unt (not even
close) and instead focused on regulations which will promote competition
in the space and attract investment from the private sector.
Although it is unclear whether a revised 2025 target will be put in
place the Channel community could potentially be on the cusp of
a new gold rush, providing the right incentives are put in place.
Although much of the initial excitement has settled and now the
focus has been put back onto the Brexit negotiations, I think
most people would welcome a revised target, irrespective of
which part of the political spectrum they fall on.
I am thoroughly looking forward to Channel Live this
month (11th and 12th of September) where much of this will
be discussed in-depth as the Channel looks for new technology,
relationships and opportunities to take their businesses to the next
level. If you want to gauge your business among your peers, there
really no other place to do it. I look forward to seeing you all at the
NEC in Birmingham for another great event.
Enjoy the issue
