OUT OF THIS WORLD?
Starlux is shaping up to be a new luxury player in the Asia market,
with an eye on luxury as well as the North America market – and
the stars beyond
Taiwanese carrier, Starlux Airlines is due
to commence operations in early 2020,
with a focus on style and luxury. The
airline will launch with the A321neo, the
first of which is due in October 2019, with
nine more following until late 2021.
Starlux has turned to BMW Group
Designworks to design the interiors.
The airline has aimed for a tranquil
atmosphere in the eight-seat business
cabin, using dark and elegant colours
intended to evoke “the majesty of the
galaxy” (astronomy is a running theme at
Starlux, in line with the airline’s slogan of
‘Born with luxury. Shining like stars’. The
Diamond seat by Collins has been
selected, made rather distinctive with the
application of a futuristic cashmere silver
finish on the backshells while the seated
environment trimmed in tasteful dark grey fabrics and dividers, lifted
by accents of rose gold on the seatbelt and headrest surround. The
82in-long bed may not be a necessity on many of the A321neo routes,
especially internal flights, but the 15.6in IFE display will be appreciated.
The seats in economy are trimmed in a much brighter scheme of
textiles in natural colours, with articulating leather headrests. The
airline chose a model with ‘ultra-thin’ seatbacks to maximise leg room
which, combined with the relatively low 180 seat count, should make for
a comfortable economy experience, enhanced by 10.1in IFE displays.
All passengers will also have access to free wi-fi, via SITAONAIR’s
Internet ONAIR wi-fi portal, powered by Link ONAIR over Inmarsat’s
high-speed GX Aviation satellite network.
Starlux chairman, Chang Kuo-wei (a former pilot and also former
chairman of Taiwan’s EVA Airways) promises that despite its high-end

Taiwanese fashion designer,
Sean Yin. The collection
combines fashion elements from
the 1940s and 50s with spaceage
accents of natural gold and
‘space silver’ tones.
Starlux employees contributed
their thoughts relating to the
practicality of the new uniforms,
with results including casual
caps instead of traditional hats
for pilots, and a unisex bag for
cabin crew which can hold an
iPad and A4-sized files and be
worn either as a handbag or a
crossbody bag. Male airport
agents and cabin crew can wear
open-neck shirts, and all frontline
staff will wear badges with
the slogan ‘Safety is our attitude’
– a key concern of the CEO.
Starlux has also developed
‘Home in the Air’, a brand scent
created with local perfumier,
P.Seven to evoke the tranquility
of home and the expanse of the
galaxy – achieved through notes
of wood and leather, iris and
violets apparently.

not be prohibitively priced. “Being highend
and luxurious is not about the price
tag, but rather an attitude, a standard
embedded in our brand,” Chang stated.
It will be interesting to see how the
overall Starlux cabin schemes look, and
also how the airline will apply the luxury
focus to its five A350-900s, deliveries of
which are scheduled for late 2021 (plus
12 A350-1000s in Q3 2022), which is also
when the airline is looking to expand its
sights from southeast Asia to the wider
Asia region and transpacific routes.
