INTO THE BLUE
New York’s hometown airline, JetBlue has revealed the interior schemes
for its new A321neo fleet, a design intended to create a downtown feel
in the skies, with upscale comfort
From amenities to IFE, to introducing premium suites
with doors, JetBlue has always embraced its New York
roots and dared to go its own way to be a low-cost
carrier with a distinct personality. The airline’s new
A321neo interiors continue the airline’s strong sense of
brand, immersing passengers in JetBlue the moment
they board, when they are bathed in the brand’s sky blue
mood lighting and uplifted by on-brand boarding music.
The A321neo cabins are not just a branding exercise
though, and behind the designs lie a great deal of
industrial design work, carried out with input from
Acumen in London, which strived to create a strong
architectural signature at the entrance to complement
the ‘softer’ elements of sound and light. The entrance project included
softening the aesthetic of the galley space using features such as fullheight
SNACK TIME
A unique feature of the JetBlue experience is the
self-service snack and drinks station, known as
the Marketplace on other aircraft in the fleet, but
branded ‘The Pantry’ for the A321neo. The airline
hopes to subtly lure customers to this zone by use
of creative mood lighting, which creates a blue hoop
around The Pantry in the middle of the cabin, a visual
tool which flows alongside the denim-style carpet
of the main cabin.
edge-lit partitions, and creating a graphic arc flooring design.
The design teams also customised the front-row partition to provide
enhance privacy for crew during flight, as well as a subtle window to
facilitate a direct view of the cabin for crew seated in the attendant
seats. Other crew-friendly features in this zone include the addition of
fold-down tables and new stowage options for their work iPads.
The cabins have been fitted with the Collins Aerospace Meridian
seat, with the base economy offer, branded Core, offering a 32in pitch
on average, which the airline claims is “the most legroom in coach”
(based on average fleet-wide seat pitch for US airlines the claim is close
run, but true), and the economy-plus cabin (branded Even More Space)
offering at least a 35in pitch.
All seats are 18in wide and feature contoured seatbacks to create
extra knee space, adjustable padded headrests, memory foam cushions,
as well as a new ‘gadget panel’ stowage system with pockets and a
woven elastic grid that can be adjusted to suit individual needs for
storing devices.
All seats are also fitted with custommade
ELeather dress covers designed by
Acumen and manufactured by upholstery
specialist, Sabeti Wain.
Daniel Clucas, a senior designer at
Acumen and a key member of the project
team commented, “By re-working the
LOPA and developing custom stowage
options, we were able to give customers
more choice in how they use their
increased space.”
The A321neo’s lavatories have also
been customised to reflect the modern
urban residential feel of the aircraft.
Positioned at both the front and rear of
the cabins, the lavs feature hints of New
York style such as blue and grey laminate
brick tiles, a large mirrored wall and
polished concrete-effect flooring.
