A WORLD FIRST IN LIGHTING
Madelec Aero has developed two unique lighting products that
can bring several benefits to first and business class cabins
Madelec Aero France is continuing to
expand its extensive range of innovative
aircraft interior LED lighting products
with the introduction of two new ambient
lamps for the first and business class
sectors. The products have been
developed in response to airlines’ desire
to offer something unique to ‘wow’
their customers – something special
that no other carrier has.
The first innovation is the Luna range,
the world’s first LED lamp shade (patent
pending).The shade has no conventional
light source (such as a bulb), with the
shade material itself creating the lighted
area, and a line of side-emitting diodes
illuminating the flexible diffuser material.
The shade looks and feels like a
conventional lamp shade with a fabrictextured
covering, and is available in any
colour. The light output (also available in
any colour) can be within or outside the
shade, as required.
These lamps also come with
‘Square beam’
lens technology

into neighbouring
adjustable ‘square beam’ lens
technology, enabling the lighted area
to be limited to a small area, such as
a tray table area, with no light spill to
neighbouring passengers.

The increased scrutiny on airlines to offer
sufficient facilities for passengers with
reduced mobility (PRMs) is leading to an
increased need for onboard wheelchairs.
Inventor of the Airchair, Brian
Richards, recognised the need for
improved design in onboard wheelchairs.
His ideas would consider the comfort
and dignity of users, as well as the
strict requirements from airlines for
wheelchairs that are lightweight, with a
compact footprint for easy storage in an
overhead locker. Consequently, in 2007
Richards created the Airchair, and it is
now used by airlines across the world,
both large and small.
The unit can be mounted on existing
lamp holders or fitted as a stand-alone
feature, with custom-made holders to
match any aircraft interior design. The
shade (28V AC/DC 115V 400Hz) can be
controlled using existing
controls or custom
switching, and is
fully dimmable.
The second
innovation is an
affordable plugand
play LED
passenger reading
light bulb range, which
includes a BA9 and BA8, in
all colour temperatures, 28V AC/DC.
Advantages of these bulbs include
significant heat reduction and energy
savings and a MTBF of more than 50,000
hours. The unit fits directly into the
existing passenger service unit, replacing
the incandescent bulb.
