consist of lightweight voile fabric, which gives
the heavy curtains an elegant and lightweight
look. The staircase can be transformed into an
auditorium at the push of a button.
Open on all sides
A more classical approach to auditorium design
was chosen in the Musée du quai Branly in Paris,
France. Also an architectural landmark, designed

by Jean Nouvel, the museum includes a 490-seat
auditorium in the center of the building, which
is open to all surrounding sides. The auditorium
space unfolds to the visitor almost like an ancient
amphitheater, entered from behind the last row
of seats. The space can be closed off for events
again by the use of heavy, multilayer sound
damping curtains in a special design with silver
printed and individually cut outside layers.
Office auditorium
A very different kind of auditorium is located
in Utzwil, Switzerland. Here, in the new
headquarters of Swiss company Bühler, a huge
auditorium area is integrated in the open-plan
office. The central auditorium space can
transform into a meeting point, information hub
and assembly area. Huge 12-layer curtains damp
sound by 26dB and close off the space when
needed. Otherwise, the curtain system is held
in hidden boxes, to open up the impressive space
to employees and visitors. The motorized curtain
systems enable users to control the room layout
and acoustics. n
