High-strength yet lightweight
materials are essential for the
aerospace industry. For this reason,
in addition to composites, modern
stainless-steel alloys are employed
that make it possible to
manufacture components with ever
thinner wall thicknesses.
The high safety standards of the

Testing methods such as
radiographic inspection for quality
assurance, for the verification of
geometric characteristics or to
investigate voluminous defects
such as pores and foreign
inclusions in welded joints. In order
to detect even the smallest
irregularities reliably, it is essential
for the digital image to have high
resolution, as well as high contrast
and as little noise as possible.
These requirements are all
fulfilled by high resolution Digital
Detector Arrays (DDA) such as the
DRC 2430 NDT and DRA 3543 NDT
from DÜRR NDT. Unlike
conventional radiographic film,
these panels have in-built
functionality to capture images in
such a way that noise is
significantly reduced, therefore
details. In addition, digital image
analysis with 65536 different gray
levels offers a significantly higher
contrast than is offered by analog
radiographic film.
This can be illustrated with the
example of a mini-bellows (external
diameter 8mm with a length of
35mm), typically used to decouple
vibrations or to compensate for
thermally induced changes in
length. Image 1, acquired with the
DRC 2430 NDT (76 m pixel pitch)
and magnification technique (4x),
exhibits a substantially higher
contrast and resolution compared
to Image 2, taken with conventional
radiographic film (C3). Another
important advantage is that the
digital radiographic image is
available within seconds of it
being taken.
The accompanying D-Tect X-ray
inspection software supports the
analysis with many helpful tools and
simplifies defect recognition in the
digital image. The DDA offset gain
calibration function also provides
optimal image homogeneity and
ensures result reproducibility. With

special hard and software in order to overcome controller
limitations at high speed of up to 1000mm/s even on curved
surfaces. The corresponding UT data needs to be taken in
equidistant shots and has to be stored with delay free and
jitter free position data. The necessary short cycle times
can be guaranteed through this patented technology. All
this will ensure the desired accuracy.
Genuine robotic software will try to improve the actual
scan paths by spline interpolation. With Framatome ISQUS
software solutions the predefined scan lines will be kept for
guaranteed defect detection performance. This can be
verified with the integrated off-line programming module.
The ISQUS software solutions include special features for
laser alignment of double robot systems. The achievable
extraordinary accuracy has proven its long-term stability in
