helps to improve the e ciency of the work cycle.
THE MAKING OF A MULTINATIONAL
Today Sandvik is a well-known global enterprise, but this multinational fl avor was present even in
the early stages of the company’s existence. At the age of 19, Göran Fredrik Göransson working for
the family shipping business was sent from his Swedish homeland to Germany fi rst and then the
UK, before the US and France. On his return he put into practice some of the lessons and skills
learned on his travels and in the 1850s oversaw the acquisition of a local pig iron producer. That
purchase led in 1862 to the formation of a new steel producing company by the name of
Sandvikens Jernverk.
The fi rst in the world to apply the innovative Bessemer process for the inexpensive production
of steel on an industrial scale, the company’s founder Göransson ensured the company made the
most of its technological breakthrough focussing on exports while also investing in R&D. Exactly
110 years after its formation the company name was shortened to Sandvik, the brand that endures
to this day. Now approaching 160 years of business, the fi rm has adapted to the point that it
currently focuses on three core areas of production: metal cutting tools; mining vehicles; and
stainless steel and alloy products. It employs around 42,000 people, with a presence in over 160
countries around the world.
