FOREWORD
The industrial vehicle world is changing. Connectivity,
autonomy and electri cation are emerging as the
three mega-trends set to de ne the future of our
industry – and beyond. But, with this radical
rethinking of how we build o -highway machinery, is enough
attention being given to how such vehicles look and function on
a day-to-day basis? It’s all too easy to take a traditional tractor or
dump truck design, remove the engine, replace it with some
batteries, tick the ‘electri ed’ box and move on. But is this to
miss a trick? What other new possibilities and opportunities do
electri cation, connectivity and automation present beyond
their primary functions?
It is against this backdrop of unprecedented change that iVT
is relaunching its Design Challenge series. is is the franchise
that invites industrial designers from around the world to submit
ideas for new machines that will re the collective imagination
of the industry, leading to new conversations, and even new
vehicles, that previously hadn’t even been thought of. is issue,
long-time iVT contributor, industrial designer Jon Pope, is
helping us to showcase what will now be a centerpiece of our
O -Highway Annual edition. When designing his latest concept,
the electric articulated dump truck that graces the cover of this
magazine, Pope was able to a step back and rethink the vehicle
from the ground up, exploring and exploiting the design
possibilities presented by electri cation. Ultimately Pope has
created a safer, more versatile, easier-to-use concept with
features that, with advances in battery technology, could one day
be found on real machines. You can read more about the vehicle
and how to enter the Design Challenge 2021 from page 12.
Another striking design that you’ll nd in this issue is
Yanmar’s autonomous excavator. Doing away with a cab
completely, this robot was demonstrated live at Bauma Munich
in 2019, automatically creating the Yanmar logo out of
polystyrene balls. Admittedly this demo, which took place in
a sealed 6m x 6m perspex cube, is a far cry from the kind of
constantly variable challenge such a machine would encounter
on the average construction site, but it is nevertheless
a tantalizing glimpse of the far-future. On page 38 iVT’s new
deputy editor Saul Wordsworth speaks to the brains behind the
machine and discusses the many challenges that lie between this
concept and real-world deployment.
Of course none of these grand ideas would be possible
without the leading suppliers who are constantly pushing
forward in every niche of vehicle design, bringing OEM
engineers the most versatile systems and components on o er.
Our O -Highway Annual is also about showcasing the very best
of these. You can read more in the nal four sections of this
magazine, beginning with Engines on page 45.
We hope you enjoy this
edition, and if you are an
industrial designer, are inspired to
submit a entry for the new Design
Challenge. Who knows? It could
be your vehicle on the cover of the
iVT O -Highway Annual 2021.
