FROM THE EDITOR
What’s your
barometer?
It’s that time of year again when we gear up for what I call the ‘Market Barometer’ also known
as Mobile World Congress (MWC).
My inbox has been ooded with requests by those companies who think they have
something truly special to show o . Wading through the emails a
few clear trends are becoming clear. is year the major focus will be on
5G… again, but this time it will be much more of a reality with the big
smartphone manufacturers releasing their 5G compatible devices. Samsung
and Huawei are already expected to show of new 5G devices but others are
expected to follow suit.
Interestingly Samsung has decided against launching its new
agship Galaxy model at the event, this demonstrates how far the
event has come over the years. e underlying infrastructure is
now where we are seeing a lot of innovation with the advent
of NFV and SDN. e Internet of ings has been steadily
growing at the event and although the marketing teams
have exhausted their IoT spiel connected technology will be
everywhere.
ere will be a smattering of device launches I’m sure,
but the excitement seems to be building around foldable screens
particularly. We got a glimpse of a few at events last year, Royole and
Samsung were the rst, but I am now expecting a hands on model to
be available from a number of manufacturers. I am sceptical about
the future of the foldable tablet/ smartphone, I just can’t see the mass
appeal (yet) so other than looking pretty cool my bet is they will
eventually fall into the same category the 3D TV. From what I have
seen the models look a bit cumbersome and lack a certain nesse
we have come to enjoy… you are welcome to prove me wrong on
this opinion.
May I draw your attention to two things in this issue, the
Wilidx UC&C Summit piece on page 28 and Ian Hunter's take on
the SD-WAN market on page 54. I welcome feedback!
Enjoy the issue,
