A s Brazilian aircraft manufacturer,
Embraer celebrates its 50th anniversary,
we asked Daniel Galhardo Gomes,
strategy director, Embraer Commercial Aviation,
to share his views on the evolution of passenger
experience design, and its future.
For five decades one of the big challenges for
Embraer has been to maximise the space available
within the constraints of a regional jet fuselage. It
was the ability to accomplish this aim that helped
get Embraer off the ground.
“The passenger expects to feel comfortable,
regardless of the size of the aircraft,” states Galhardo
Gomes. “Since the first generation of the E-Jets which
entered production in 2002, our design driver has been
to offer an unmatched experience for the passenger. At
the time, we didn’t only look at regional jets. When we
evaluated narrow-body aircraft, we knew we could offer

Boeing
Brasil
In December 2018 Boeing and
Embraer announced that they
had approved the terms for a
joint venture, and the Brazilian
government gave its approval
in January 2019. In February the
strategic partnership was approved
by Embraer’s shareholders during an
extraordinary general shareholders’
meeting held at the company’s
headquarters in Brazil.
96.8% of all valid votes cast at
the meeting were in favour of
the transaction, approving a joint
venture being established with the
commercial aircraft and services
operations of Embraer. Boeing will
hold an 80% ownership stake in the
new company, and Embraer the
remaining 20%. One of the most
controversial aspects of the deal
is that the commercial aircraft
division of Embraer will be renamed
Boeing Brasil.
The transaction valued 100%
of Embraer’s commercial aircraft
operations at US$5.26bn, and
contemplates a value of $4.2 billion
for Boeing’s 80% ownership stake
in the venture.
“Approval by Embraer’s
shareholders is an important step
forward as we make progress on
bringing together our two great
aerospace companies. This strategic
global partnership will build on
Boeing’s and Embraer’s long
history of collaboration, benefit
our customers and accelerate
our future growth,” said Dennis
Muilenburg, Boeing's chairman,
president and CEO.
“This groundbreaking partnership
will position both companies to
deliver a stronger value proposition
for our customers and other
stakeholders and create more
opportunities for our employees,”
added Paulo Cesar de Souza e Silva,
president and CEO of Embraer.
“Our agreement will create
mutual benefits and boost the
competitiveness of both Embraer
and Boeing.”
The closing of the transaction is
now subject to obtaining regulatory
approvals and other customary
closing conditions, which Boeing
and Embraer hope to achieve by
the end of 2019.
