CABIN IS DESIGNED TO COMBINE
PASSENGER PRACTICALITY WITH
CLEAN STYLING
Embraer has also carried over some of the design
principles from its successful business jet line to inform
the standards for commercial aircraft, balanced by the
economic priorities of the airline industry.
“When we talk about business aviation, we think of
personalisation, exclusivity, extra comfort, etc. The
customer selects the interior in their own way, tailoring
the cabin for their specific needs. Although this market
still demands weight and performance challenges, the
customer design is the priority,” Galhardo Gomes says.
“For commercial aviation, the main purpose of the
aircraft is to be a ‘profit hunter.’ Therefore, the economic
factor becomes, not the only driver, but a strong one.
The development of a product that not only has in
mind the end user experience, but also minimises
THE NEXT 50 YEARS
Paulo Cesar de Souza e Silva, Embraer's
president and CEO discusses the next
half century for the company: "Embraer
is the result of the determination
of visionaries, who wanted to turn
the impossible into reality – and
they succeeded. It is with that same
impetus that we have grown over the
last 50 years, and with which we will
continue to do so in the future.
"On 19 August, Embraer celebrated
its 50th anniversary, a source of great
pride for all of us. Over five decades,
we have produced more than 8,000
aircraft, exported to more than 70
countries, employed around 20,000
people in 30 offices and factories
around the world, but, above all, we
have achieved the dreams of many.
"Embraer was founded in 1969
through the determination of
visionaries who wanted to turn the
impossible into reality.
"Embraer is the result of the longterm
vision of Brazil, which, in the
1940s, laid the foundation for the
aeronautical industry in
our country.
"It was with the same
impetus, determination,
attention to detail
and people, and with
a watchful eye for
opportunities, that we took
flight. We will continue to do
so over the next 50 years.
“Keeping our eyes on the future
is not only daring, but its one of the
secrets to building a solid present.”
"In this half-century, we have been
battling for space in a very competitive
market, doing things our way,
believing that what we do is incredible.
We have faced and overcome
turbulence through the years, making
use of our drive for excellence and
courage to fly higher and higher. We
have become leaders in important
segments of both commercial and
business aviation. I am sure the next
50 years will hold many challenges
and even more achievements."
the airlines’ costs, is challenging, and it is exactly
where we can benefit from business jet solutions:
bringing simple personalisation details and clever
design solutions that fulfil both passenger expectations
and airlines’ needs.”
Of Embraer’s accomplishments over the past 50 years,
Galhardo Gomes is proud of the design team’s ability to
develop cabins that have the same appeal as cabins of
larger aircraft, in smaller cross-sections.
“It is not a simple task, but we did it. Understanding
market needs, conceiving the aircraft from the inside out
and using a strong integrated product development
process are some of the strategies we have been adopting,”
he says. “One of the recent major opportunities to
optimise cabin space is seat design. The industry
has been working with lighter and slimmer seat
concepts, which can result in cabin space
optimisation, allowing higher densities
without sacrificing passenger comfort. The
challenge then becomes the combination
of design, ergonomics and new materials.”
COMING INNOVATIONS
When it comes to new materials, Embraer believes
the priority should be to extend service life and simplify
maintenance. “Cabin materials for commercial aircraft
interiors must be robust, easy to clean and easily
replaceable when necessary,” Galhardo Gomes says.
“The industry has
been working with
lighter and slimmer
seat concepts'”
