A 19TH CENTURY MAJORCAN BAKERY HAS BEEN REDESIGNED
AS A MODERN RESTAURANT PAYING HOMAGE TO ITS PAST
When approached to renovate
Forn de Sant Joan Restaurant,
in the historic centre of Palma,
Majorca, El Equipo Creativo took
inspiration from the cultural value
of both the island and the space,
a former bakery.
Hand-made wicker basketry
is traditional to the region, and
has been re-imagined in a modern
way. El Equipo Creativo used
overlapping wooden strips to
create a lattice in the main dining
room. This woven skin adapts to
the irregular shape of the space,
hides its facilities and creates an
interesting texture and warm feel.

The rest of the walls are
painted with a reddish hue that
recalls the bakery’s terracotta
oven. Chairs, some in wicker and
others in an intense turquoise,
In the double-height entrance
area, where the old oven is
located, the design references
another characteristic element
of old bakeries – their shelves full
of curious objects. Inspired by
the oven, and fire in general, the
designers used original terracotta
roof tiles and new ceramic tiles
as part of the bar, and copper
metal for the shelves.
