Second opinions
Ifeel privileged to speak to many business leaders in our market and I always nd it fascinating
how they decide to take their businesses to the next level. In a recent Channel Insider Podcast
I was joined by Managing Director of Aura Technology Tim Walker who spoke about his
decision to appoint Sir Clive Woodward to the board.
Many of you will be aware of Sir Clive’s contribution to the sporting community, notably
the national and Lions rugby teams, as head coach, and also the Director of Sport at the British
Olympic Association. You may not be aware of his proli c business career and how he has
coached many successful businesses on leadership.
If you haven’t heard the podcast you can listen to it on the website or
you can search for ‘Comms Business Podcast’ on iTunes.
I have been learning recently about the importance of getting the right
people into your organisation and often professional sports people, or even
ex-military personnel, can bring great leadership and competitive qualities
to a business. When I asked Tim why he chose Sir Clive he simply said
“I like the idea of accountability and the external oversight it brings
by involving non-execs.”
For business owners that have been at the helm for a decade
or more it may take an opinion, or piece of advice, from an
experienced third party to make them realise they are selling
themselves short in certain areas of the business. It’s this
guidance which could enable you to break out of the at
periods. Speaking to Adam Zoldan, Director of Knight
Corporate Finance, on the podcast he said, “I think it’s a really
healthy thing for entrepreneurial businesses.”
It’s not just advice, coaching or contacts that a non-exec can add
to the mixture either. One member of sta can have a huge impact on
the people around them within a business. Walker stated, “ e big
thing for me is since the team met Sir Clive, the feedback I’ve had
from the sta has been ‘this makes me want to be better than I am
already.’”
at kind of motivation is hard to buy!
