Cost vs benefit
While the 2D machine guidance
is produced in-house, the 3D
version and machine control are
a product of a partnership with
Trimble Earthworks.
Relying on two GPS receivers for
positioning, the system features up
to four integrated 100Hz IMU angle
sensors, an electronic controller
integrated within the chassis and
an optional mobile radio receiver.
The benefits of the technology are
clear; greater accuracy of grading,
done more quickly will lead to
higher productivity.
In the long-run, it will lead to
cost-savings for the customer, but
the price-sensitive market means
Hyundai does not include it as
standard in this class, leaving the
choice up to the customer.
Nevertheless the new design is
helping to bring the cost down.
“Machine control technology
does initially represent a significant
cost for the customer,” admits
Declercq, “But the return on
investment is surely there and will
be helped by a direct saving in the
total cost for the installation of the
system. By providing the preinstallation
at the factory, we can
support the customer in decreasing
the cost on the machine. Rather
than doing a retrofit installation in
the upper frame of the machine, we
can pre-wire the machine directly
during assembly and this cuts down
the labor time.
“Once the wiring and prepositioning
of the main elements
are there, the installation of the
machine control system becomes
more of a ‘plug-and-play’ setup.”
Delivering Stage V
Another major technological update
on the machine is its Stage V engine.
But while Hyundai has to comply
with emissions legislation going
forward, its customers temporarily
still have the choice of either an EU
Stage V or Stage IV unit, while
existing engine stock is cleared.
Naturally, the cleaner Stage V
engine is more financially costly
