WHAT’S NEW BAUMA REVIEW
MARITIME DIVISION FIRST
LIEBHERR LRS LH
Liebherr is Bauma’s largest exhibitor, so it was surprising this
year marked the first time ever a vehicle from its maritime
division had been exhibited at the show. Liebherr used the
event to give the world premiere to its new LRS LH (Liebherr
Reach Stacker Log Handler), which has been adapted for the
timber industry from its LRS container handling range. The
machine is designed for use not only in timber handling ports
but also in wood-processing premises such as sawmills and
paper and pulp mills.
Equipped with a stepless, hydrostatic drive as standard, the
system enables a temporary increase in vehicle performance
without increasing fuel consumption or exhaust emissions.
This is thanks to surplus power being regenerated back into
the system. Featuring a grapple capacity of 8m² as well as a
stacking height and outreach of over 8m, the machine also has
a well-protected operator’s cab and a log pusher ideally suited
to the handling of timber.

ADVANCED ACCESSIBILITY
CASE 580ST
With all the understandable excitement
generated by the unveiling of Case’s
natural gas-powered wheel loader concept,
Project Tetra (for more on that see page
16), it was possible that Bauma visitors
missed another of the OEM’s stand-out
vehicles. Seeking to address accessibility
issues, a backhoe loader prototype suitable
for wheelchair-bound operators was also
presented at the show for the first time.
Featuring accessible elevator
attachments, an external seat can be
maneuvered into place next to an
individual at ground level using a special
control joystick, the seat can then be
moved to transfer the operator to the cab.
“Straightforward controls were crucial
to our vision for this prototype,” said Egidio
Galano, compact product line director for

COMPACT TAIL-SWING EXCAVATOR
LIUGONG 909 ECR
Chinese OEM LiuGong used to Bauma to
launch six new machines to the off-highway
market. One of the key vehicles was a compact
excavator: Designed from the ground up in
close collaboration with UK plant hire
customers – using the LiuGong Development
Process (LDP) – the 909 ECR radius excavator
is specifically targeted to inner-city
applications in the European rental market.
“This model was purpose built for
applications requiring compact tail-swing,”
LiuGong sales director, Linjun Wang (pictured
left) told iVT in Munich. “And because the steel
tracks are covered in rubber, it can drive on
roads without damaging them.”
Case. “They ensure speedy and convenient
access, meaning the operator is
entirely self-reliant.
“Having already been
a pioneering player in the
creation of the first ever
backhoe loader, we are
delighted to now offer the next
key advancement in machine
technology and inclusion.”
The external elevator is folded
back when not in use, it has no impact on
the operation of the backhoe loader and
ensures that people of all mobility can use
the same machine.
“Our UK plant hire customers asked us for a
compact radius machine which would fill the gap
in their rapidly growing market,” added Howard
Dale, chairman for LiuGong Europe. “The desire
for greater operational stability and an improved
tool handling capability were consistently voiced
by our customer panels and in operator feedback
sessions. With the new 909ECR we’ve proved that
we’ve listened, acted and delivered.”
With an operating weight of 8,900kg, the
versatile tool carrier offers 44kW (59hp) of
power at 2,200rpm can use a wide variety of
attachments. “Our design DNA,” commented Gary
Major, LiuGong director of industrial design, “is
genuinely driven by the voice of the customer.”
