SPECIALISED BRAKES
Brake specialist Knott has developed the ideal braking
solution for use in small and medium-sized earth
movers and farm loaders. A hydraulic braking system
and a mechanical parking brake in one. Their
hydromechanical sliding caliper brakes will be on show
at next month’s ConExpo.
“In the past, brakes for farm loaders, earth movers
and articulated loaders were often taken over from the
automotive industry,” explains Richard Hamberger,
head of sales for Knott. “When these were no longer
available, we at Knott developed our own tailored
braking solution.” Hamberger goes on to emphasise
that this solution is more than just a substitute – it
features numerous benefi ts compared to car brakes.
The result is a new hydromechanical sliding caliper
brake that offers the best of both worlds: the functions
known from the automotive industry and the durability
of an off-road system. Together with the right sealings
for rougher regions, and unlike brakes used to date, it
is even suitable for reversable operations, i.e. for both
driving directions. The patented automatic adjustment
function from Knott ensures maintenance remains low
at the same time.
“With our hydromechanical sliding caliper brakes,
we have developed a product which delivers the full
range of performance from a compact size,” says
Hamberger. Weighing a mere 6kg and featuring a
braking torque of 1,400Nm, the system is designed for
vehicles with an overall weight of fi ve to seven tonnes.
This high performance is currently specifi ed by
renowned manufacturers such as Wacker-Neuson,
Kramer and Komatsu.
Knott is geared towards the future too. The
electrical actuator for the hydromechanical sliding
caliper brakes is already available, ensuring the brake
is equipped for future challenges.

LOWNOISE FANS FOR COMPACT OFFHIGHWAY VEHICLES
Horton Inc., the world’s leading provider of engine
cooling systems for on-highway and o -highway
equipment, is expanding its o ering in 2020 to
serve the needs of smaller engine makers. e
new LS5 fan is speci cally designed to reduce
noise while providing maximum cooling
performance for small industrial, construction and
agricultural applications.
“ e LS5 takes what we’ve developed in
solutions for larger, heavy-duty equipment and
applies the technology in a smaller engine format,”
says Blake Harris, Horton’s product manager for
o -highway. “ e fan’s ve-blade design delivers
the necessary air ow while taking up less physical
space – and giving customers a more a ordable
option when designing their engines.”
e LS5 is tailored to the engine cooling needs
of material handling applications like scissor li s
and forkli s, and can also be used in a variety of
smaller construction and agricultural tractors.
As noise and emission regulations continue
to impact the way even these less-invasive
machines are created, OEM design
engineers can gain a signi cant edge via
optimised fan blade design.
e LS5 is the rst Horton molded
fan available in a diameter of less than
500mm. Engine manufacturers can select
from two options, the LS5A (380mm in
diameter) or the LS5B (430mm). Each
version weighs less than two pounds.
