TWIN DISC’S NEW TRANSMISSION SYSTEM OFFERS
A RELIABLE SOLUTION FOR ALL CONDITIONS
China’s CNPC West Drilling, one of the region’s
top oil and gas businesses, needed a more
reliable fracturing rig. They found it with Twin Disc’s
TA90-7600 transmission system, which delivers long
hours of high performance in challenging conditions
with dependability and durability.
The solution
Twin Disc’s TA90-7600 transmission system is designed
specifically for pressure-pumping rigs for oil and gas
well stimulation. The unique Twin Disc system eliminates
the torque converter, uniting a deceptively simple
countershaft design with heavy-duty clutch assemblies
for durability, and delivering performance that matches
pressure-pumping rig engine life. The TA90-7600 still
allows full range-to-range power shifts with no throttle
dipping. The compact size lets it fit between the frame
rails of mobile equipment.
Additional advantages include gear ratios that create
a better flow rate, maintaining pressure and thereby
increasing production, and closely spaced gear ratios
maintain more consistent pump flow rate, optimising
engine performance.
The result
CNPC came to prefer the simple, robust design when
initial use showed the system delivers long hours of high
performance in challenging conditions.
“This model has been in field fracturing operation for
more than 500 hours,” says CNPC’s Yan Zhiyong, leader of

the field fracturing team. “It shows consistently good,
smooth performance.”
Smooth shifting minimises shock to the whole
drive train, extending time between overhauls and living
up to CNPC’s expectations that the firm can count on
Twin Disc.
Simple design, robust performance
Designed to match the engine life on pressure-pumping
rigs that stimulate oil and gas production, the TA90-7600
transmission unites a deceptively simple countershaft
design with heavy-duty clutch assemblies for durability
and robust performance. And the compact size lets it fit
between the frame rails of mobile equipment.
The benefits
Created specifically for the pressure-pumping market,
the transmission does not require throttle dipping for
any of the range-to-range shifts. It is designed to be
power shifted under all loaded or unloaded situations,
and its lightweight yet durable aluminum housing
reduces overall vehicle weight. A torque converter is not
required, further contributing to overall weight savings.
Small and evenly spaced gear ratio steps ensure that
well pressure does not drop during gear shifts.
In most cases it uses the same oil as the engine,
simplifying onsite fluids logistics and servicing
requirements. It also includes a highly flexible coupling
to reduce the damaging effects of the torsional
excitations by the engine and piston pump. Last but not
least the oil fill port and sight glass are co-located,
making oil fills a one-person operation. iVT
